Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)
A Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO) is a specialised brace designed to support and stabilise the lower limb from the thigh down to the foot. It is commonly prescribed for patients with lower-limb instability caused by skeletal deformities, muscular weakness, paralysis, neurological conditions, or complex gait abnormalities. By maintaining alignment and controlling motion, a KAFO helps improve walking stability, comfort, and safety.
At Hope Rehabilitation Center, we have been providing high-quality, custom-made orthotic solutions since 1988. Our KAFOs are fabricated on your exact measurements, using premium medical-grade plastics, lightweight metals, and durable joints to ensure optimal support, comfort, and long-term reliability. Ready-made options are also available for suitable cases.
Wearing Your KAFO
Your KAFO is tailor-made for your unique needs. Because each design varies depending on your condition and goals, our team will guide you on the correct way to apply the brace and adjust the straps to achieve the best possible fit and function.
A new KAFO may feel unusual initially due to limb alignment correction and pressure redistribution. A gradual break-in period is important.
Wear Time Guidelines
- Start slowly: wear your KAFO for up to one hour on the first day.
- Increase wearing time by 30 minutes to 1 hour daily until you are comfortable wearing it for the required duration.
- Mild muscle aches are common initially.
- If pain occurs, remove the KAFO for 2–4 hours and retry.
- If pain persists, stop wearing it and contact Hope Center for adjustment.
Choosing the Right Shoes
- Use supportive shoes with a closed toe and heel, similar to laced sport shoes.
- Prefer low heels, removable insoles, and slightly wider sizes for added comfort.
- Avoid sandals and dress shoes.
- Always wear long cotton socks or tights under the KAFO.
- Ensure footwear is properly secured.
- Children’s KAFO-compatible shoes are available at Hope Center.
Skin Care
Regular skin checks are important, especially in the first few weeks.
Temporary redness is normal, but stop using the KAFO and contact us if you notice:
- Redness lasting more than 30 minutes
- Blisters
- Skin breakdown
Caring for Your KAFO
Cleaning:
Wipe the inside with warm water and antibacterial soap. Towel-dry completely. Avoid direct heat.
Straps & Padding:
These may wear out over time and can be replaced at Hope Center.
Plastic:
Inspect regularly for cracks or fatigue. Do not attempt repairs yourself.
Joints:
Check knee and ankle joints before each use for cracks, loose screws, or malfunction.
If your KAFO has locking knee joints, ensure both sides are securely locked before walking.
For KAFOs with spur attachments, check for wear in both spur and shoe socket.
Keep joints free of dirt and apply a small amount of Vaseline only if advised by our team.
Review and Follow-Up
- Review your KAFO every 12 months to ensure proper function.
- For heavy manual work or dusty environments, a 6-month review is recommended.
- Children require reviews at least every 6 months due to growth.
Never attempt to adjust or repair your KAFO yourself. For any issues, visit Hope Rehabilitation Center for professional assessment and service.
